Can you use a CBD pessary on your period?

The short answer is yes. In fact, many women find that their period is the time they need pelvic support the most.

The short answer

You can absolutely use a CBD pessary while you are on your period. Many people ask if they can use CBD suppositories on your period, and the answer is a resounding yes. There's no medical reason to stop your routine just because you're bleeding. For many of us, the days leading up to and during a period are exactly when we experience the most tension and discomfort in the pelvic area.

Because the pessary works locally, it can be used alongside your usual cycle without interfering with your hormones or your flow.

Using it with a tampon or pad

While you can use a pessary on your period, there are a few practical things to keep in mind regarding your choice of period products.

Pads are your best friend: As the pessary melts, it turns into an oil that is absorbed by the vaginal walls. Some of this might naturally leak out. We recommend using a sanitary pad or period pants during the hour after insertion to catch any residue and keep your clothes clean.

Avoid tampons initially: We don't recommend using a tampon at the same time as inserting the pessary. Tampons are highly absorbent and will likely soak up the CBD oil before it has a chance to work. If you prefer tampons, try to wait at least 30 to 60 minutes after inserting the pessary to allow it to melt and absorb before putting a tampon in.

Tips for comfort during your period

If you're feeling particularly tender, here’s how to make the process as comfortable as possible:

  • Timing is everything: Many people find that inserting a pessary just before bed is easiest. It gives the CBD plenty of time to absorb while you are lying down, reducing any leakage.
  • Lie back and relax: Try to lie down for at least 15–20 minutes after insertion. This helps the pessary stay in place while it melts at body temperature.
  • Cleanliness: Always wash your hands before and after insertion. During your period, the vaginal environment is slightly different, so maintaining good hygiene is even more important to avoid irritation.

When to skip it

While it's safe for most during a period, there are a few times you should hold off:

Do not use CBD pessaries if you have an active vaginal infection (like thrush or BV) or any unexplained bleeding that isn't your period. You should also avoid them if you've recently had vaginal surgery or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
