PELVIC PAIN

How to cope with chronic pelvic pain

Living with persistent pelvic discomfort is exhausting. Here is how to build a toolkit of habits, movements, and support to help you manage daily life.

The short answer

Coping with chronic pelvic pain is less about finding a single cure and more about building a 'toolkit' of strategies. This usually includes a combination of specialist medical support, pacing your activities to avoid exhaustion, gentle movement, and daily habits that help keep your baseline comfort levels stable.

It takes time to figure out what works for your body, but having a plan in place can help you feel more in control when a flare hits.

Pacing and rest

One of the hardest things to learn is not 'pushing through' the pain. This often leads to a 'boom and bust' cycle: you do too much on a good day, which triggers a severe flare-up that leaves you out of action for days.

Pacing involves breaking tasks down into manageable chunks. If you know that standing for 30 minutes causes pain, try standing for 15, then sitting down for a rest before the ache starts. It can feel frustratingly slow, but it's the best way to stay active without paying for it later.

Heat and movement

While rest is vital, gentle movement helps stop your pelvic muscles from becoming overly 'guarded' and tense.

  • Gentle Yoga: Focus on restorative poses and deep diaphragmatic breathing, which helps to relax the pelvic floor.
  • Short walks: A bit of movement helps with circulation and can stop muscles from seizing up.
  • Heat packs: A hot water bottle or wheat bag is a classic for a reason. Heat helps to increase blood flow and relax cramped tissues.

Medical support

You don't have to do this alone. If your current routine isn't cutting it, speak to your GP about specialized support.

Pain Clinics: These offer a multidisciplinary approach, often including specialists who understand the complex nature of chronic pelvic pain.

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy: A specialist physio can teach you how to relax 'hypertonic' (overly tight) pelvic muscles, which is a common factor in chronic pain.

Daily CBD pessary support

Many women find that adding a CBD pessary to their daily routine provides that extra bit of support. Because the CBD is delivered locally to the pelvic area, it works directly where you feel the discomfort.
