Chronic pelvic pain: when the ache doesn't follow a calendar.
Chronic pelvic pain affects millions of women. Here is what may cause it, how to cope, and how a daily CBD pessary may offer gentle support.
What is chronic pelvic pain?
Chronic pelvic pain is pain below the belly button that lasts for six months or more. It can be sharp, dull, constant or intermittent. It may be linked to a period, to sex, to bowel movements or to nothing obvious at all.
Because the pelvis contains so many organs and muscles, the cause is not always simple. For some women there is one clear diagnosis; for others it is a combination of factors.
What can cause it?
- Endometriosis and adenomyosis
- Fibroids or ovarian cysts
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Irritable bowel syndrome or bladder pain syndrome
- Pelvic floor muscle tension
- Nerve irritation
Living with chronic pelvic pain
Pacing, heat, gentle movement, pelvic physiotherapy and pain management clinics can all play a part. Some women also add a daily CBD pessary to their routine for local pelvic support. It is not a cure, but it may help some women feel more comfortable day to day.
