What is the strongest period pain relief?
When period cramps feel unmanageable, you want something that works fast and lasts. Here is a guide to the strongest options available in the UK, from the pharmacy shelf to your GP's surgery.
The short answer
The 'strongest' relief depends on why you're in pain. For most women, the most effective relief comes from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) because they block the production of prostaglandins—the chemicals that make your uterus contract.
However, if your pain is severe enough to stop you from doing daily activities, the strongest option isn't always a pill from the chemist. It's often a conversation with your GP to find out if there's an underlying cause like endometriosis or fibroids.
Over-the-counter options
You don't always need a prescription for effective relief. In the UK, there are three main types of medicine you can buy:
- Naproxen: Often considered the heavy hitter for period pain. It's an NSAID that lasts longer than ibuprofen, meaning you don't have to take it as frequently.
- Ibuprofen: A very common and effective anti-inflammatory. It works well for mild to moderate cramps by reducing inflammation and prostaglandin levels.
- Paracetamol: This works differently by blocking pain signals in the brain. It's often less effective than anti-inflammatories for cramps, but it can be taken alongside them if needed.
Always read the label and speak to a pharmacist to ensure these are safe for you, especially if you have asthma or stomach issues.
Prescription options
If over-the-counter medicines aren't cutting it, your GP has access to stronger tools. They might prescribe high-strength anti-inflammatories (like mefenamic acid) which are specifically designed for heavy and painful periods.
In some cases, the 'strongest' relief isn't a painkiller at all, but hormonal contraception. The pill, the patch, or the hormonal coil can thin the lining of the uterus, leading to much lighter and less painful periods over time.
A different kind of support
While medicines are there for when the pain hits, many women look for daily ways to support their pelvic health throughout the month.
Using a CBD pessary as part of your routine can provide local support right where you need it. Because they are inserted vaginally, the CBD is delivered directly to the tissues and muscles of the pelvis, avoiding the 'first-pass' through the digestive system. It's not a medicine, but it is a way to nurture your body and help manage discomfort naturally.
